A Tribute
To our late Principal and dear friend, John Ryan.
Our dear friend John Ryan joined the education community of Enniscorthy in 1999 when he was appointed principal of St. Mary’s C.B.S. A native of Donoughmore, Cork, he had completed his teaching qualifications at Maynooth University and taught in Arklow and Wexford C.B.S. before his appointment.
The school had approx. 450 pupils when he arrived, and he led the expansion to the current 754 students. He navigated multiple building projects and introduced several new subjects to the curriculum, including computer science, physical education at leaving certificate level and home economics.
During his tenure as principal, he guided the school with vision and integrity. He led the incorporation of IT into the classroom, steered the school through Junior Cycle reform and navigated the challenges of Covid-19.
His support for all extra-curricular activities allowed the students and teachers to pursue their passions and brought great joy to many over the years.
However, it was in creating the school's culture that John excelled. He led a transformation of the school ethos to one wholly befitting an Edmund Rice school. He ensured that the school was inclusive and welcoming and served the community needs of Enniscorthy. He led the introduction of many programmes and initiatives that increased school completion but, more importantly, the sense of a place and belonging for all in the St. Mary’s C.B.S community. This was all possible because of who he was, a true gentleman.
His measured and reliable judgement, compassion and kindness, dedication and work ethic were inspirational to all in the school and the education community of Enniscorthy. His presence was as constant as the North Star.
The St Mary's C.B.S. community will march on, guided by the light he leaves in our hearts.
