Junior Cycle

Junior Certificate

The following subjects are studied for the three years and are core to the Junior Cycle in our school. The subjects studied for the Junior Cycle are:

1.Irish
2. English
3. Mathematics
4. History
5. Geography
6. Science
7. Business
8. Civic, Social and Political Education (C.S.P.E.)


There are also three other subjects which are core subjects but are not examined in our school at Junior Certificate. These are:

1. Religious Education
2. Physical Education
3. Social, Personal and Health Education (S.P.H.E.)
4. Civil, Social, Political and Health Education ( C.S.P.E.)

1st Year Junior Cycle Programme

All students receive a taster module (s) in eight optional subjects. These options are
1. Art
2. French
3. German
4. Materials Technology (Metal)
5. Materials Technology (Wood
6. Music
7. Technical Graphics
8. Technology

9. Home Economics

The taster modules are organised over two week blocks from September to December and then 1st year students are asked to choose two of these optional subjects to add to the core subjects.

Information is provided to the students by the Guidance team and a meeting is held for parents and information given to parents.

Students are asked to rank their subject preferences in order from 1 to 4. Every effort will be made to provide students with their top two preferences. There is often a high demand for the technological subjects. The school will endeavour to ensure that each student will be able to take up at least one subject from Materials Technology Wood, Materials Technology Metal or Technology at Junior Certificate.

A computer studies modules is available to all students in first year for one class period per week.

2nd and 3rd Year Junior Cycle Programme

Students study their seven core subjects, their two optional subjects and their four non examination subjects.
